Bruce E Spivey
Bruce E Spivey, MD, has been President of the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) since 2006 and was ICO Secretary-General from 1994 to 2006. He has served as an ophthalmology departmental chairman for 16 years, a hospital chief executive officer (CEO) for 16 years, the Executive Vice President and founding CEO of the American Academy of Ophthalmology from 1976 to 1992, and for 15 years was the CEO of a number of multihospital systems— several simultaneously. He is the recipient of the Jules Francois Gold Medal of the ICO, the Howe Medal of the American Ophthalmological Society, and the Bernardo Streiff Medal of the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis. His past positions include President of the Council of Medical Specialty Societies, President of the Society of Medical Administrators, President of the American Board of Medical Specialties, President of the American Ophthalmological Society, and member of the Graduate Medical Education National Advisory Committee. He has given over 40 named lectures. He has served as a trustee of the US-China Educational Institute, Helen Keller International, Coe College, other not-for-profit and for-profit boards, and was a founding trustee of the Ophthalmic Mutual Insurance Company.
